Amy Walter

Kimberley Gishler

CEMA Executive Director

Hard to believe we’re already nearing the end of Q122. Since this is my first newsletter opener of the year, I thought it would be good to recap what we’ve accomplished do far…because it’s super impressive… (and exhausting!)

We started 2022 with a sprint and haven’t looked back. Our January CEMA track at PCMA Convening leaders 2022 was a strong indicator of our progress and future potential. We hosted a full day of education sessions and networking opportunities, click here for these invaluable insights from Kati Quigly, Amy Walters & Melissa Biele, and Colleen Bisconti.

We kicked off our CEMA Connects conversation series in January with “Mind the Gap – How can we retain and cultivate talent within our organizations and adapt our skills and behaviors to match the constant change.” Meg Fasy led the conversation. Our February session “From Pivot to Pirouette” featured Angie Smith from Atlassian who discussed finding ways to refuel teams and cultivate a culture of wellness within our work. Our March CEMA Connects, led by Julie Lynch from F5, focused on “The Talent Shift,” and how the role of the event professional has changed and with it, the skills, and responsibilities. All these summaries can be found here.

CEMA Connects is proving to be a safe conversation zone where we have amazing, authentic exchanges about our most pressing events industry topics. We plan to host a session each month. Our next session is April 12th 10:00 PDT with Allison Croker on Content & Clarity.

We’ve had a busy CEMA Educational Webinar season so far. We kicked it off in January with two programs: “Events as Vehicles for Brand Sustainability Values” moderated by Josh Adams, Industry Relations Strategist, streamlinevents and sponsored by Marina Bay Sands, and “Event Industry Forecasts Driven by Data” featuring Jess Petitt, SVP of Commercial Strategy, Insights & Analytics at Hilton, sponsored by Hilton. Find both here.

Our next webinar “ Lessons from NetApp for Successfully Driving Meetings at Events and Executive Briefing Sessions” will be held Tuesday, March 29th 11:00 PDT. This session will offer valuable insights from panelists Mike Gearhart, Global Events and Don Childs, Executive Briefings at NetApp and is moderated by Aaron Karpaty from Jifflenow. You can register at https://cema.swoogo.com/NetApp

We also hosted two event executive focus groups, sponsored by Destination Toronto. January’s session, led by noted executive consultant Karen Calder, focused on professional wellness and development. Our February focus group explored key industry trends for 2022 and how to manage the challenges and opportunities they present.

Our signature Study Tours are starting back up again! Our first one will be at the end of April at the NFL Draft in Las Vegas. How cool is that?

We’re also ramping up our 2022 our “Smart Women I Really Like/Smart Humans I Really Like) SWIRL/SHIRL informal get-togethers to create more engagement. In January, the SWIRL group discussed goals on work/life balance with live events in everyone’s future, especially end-of-July’s CEMA Summit. The group also shared heartfelt issues on what’s going on personally from moving and renovating homes to family updates and how we’re spending precious free time. We’ll be hosting more SWIRL/SHIRL networking circles throughout the year.

Planning and programming for CEMA Summit 2022 is in full swing. Our theme this year: “Inspiration, Community, Ideas” truly reflects our value to members and the qualities that set CEMA apart in the industry. You won’t want to miss Summit this year. We’re thrilled to have award-winning journalist, motivational speaker and best-selling author Mariana Atencio who will offer a fresh, global perspective on how resilience, innovation and authenticity can drive performance, productivity, well-being and success for you and your teams. Her keen insights into achieving balance, happiness and true diversity as a leader will help you grow, and empower you to attract, retain and reskill talent to embrace new opportunities as the events industry evolves.

As a reminder CEMA Summit is July 31 – Aug 2 in Nashville, TN. Registration is live, so go for it!

Our membership renewal campaign is still going strong, and we have a high renewal rate with event marketers. This year we’ve introduced “WhyCEMA” – a series of short testimonial videos from CEMA members to help personalize our campaign. Click here to hear fellow CEMA members discuss what CEMA has meant to their careers.

Looking forward into 2022, we’ll continue work with our stellar Board and strategic partners to drive more value for our members and for the industry. We know we’ll continue to deal with shifts this year, and CEMA members will continue to rely on each other to be fearless innovators who continually redefine what’s possible and put amazing ideas into action.

New role, new horizons!

Why CEMA Why CEMA

We’ve been talking a great deal over the past year about the evolving role of event marketers and the new areas of focus and skillsets we all have to embrace. We’ve also talked a lot about our integration into the PCMA family and the great synergies we enjoy. The success of our joint event at PCMA CL is a strong indicator of the added value we can deliver to the event industry.

In that vein, it was unexpected, but not surprising when PCMA President and CEO Sherrif Karamat asked me to take on additional responsibilities and serve as the association’s new Senior Vice President Global Events & Experiences. It’s an exciting opportunity because events are my passion and providing leadership and direction to PCMA global events puts me back in the game on a whole new level.

The best part is that I’ll continue to lead CEMA and will remain hands-on with every aspect of what we do. I’ve been blessed to work with a vibrant, creative, and generous community of event executives for so many years through CEMA. I’m truly standing on the shoulders of giants to bring that energy and experience to the PCMA family as we create the next generation of cutting-edge educational, experiential and information sharing opportunities on a global scale.

Calling all Experts: Help Us Build the CEMA Knowledge Base

One of our core tenets as a member organization is generous knowledge and experience sharing. Over the years, we’ve worked to build a repository of expert content on the CEMA website with our CEMA Blog and Case Study/White paper section. Last year, the pandemic put a hold on that activity, but we are ramping it back up in 2022.

We’re encouraging all CEMA members to become guest contributors this year. It’s a great way to promote your brand, your team and yourself, while helping inform and enlighten your fellow members.

We welcome content on just about any relevant event marketing topic, but one thing we really want to showcase is the creativity and innovation that’s taken place over the past 12 months to pivot successfully from in-person events to digital – and now, the road back to live events. Topics include:

  • Unique ideas and programs that are driving participation and engagement.
  • Breakthrough strategies and programs that helped re-define participant experience in digital environments.
  • Calculated risks that worked – and lessons learned from the ones that didn’t.
  • Smart, creative approaches to architecting hybrid events
  • Exciting technologies and services that are supporting event marketers as the landscape shifts.
  • Trends, promising new approaches, best practices, tips, and advice.
  • Thoughtful perspectives on “the next normal” – experience, engagement, security, balance, wellness, etc.
  • New measurement models and how data is informing event ROI.

Content Specs:

  • The ideal length is 300-500 words but we’re flexible. If a case or white paper is longer, we’ll post a summary on the CEMA site and link to the full document.
  • A relevant and compelling image, chart or graph is always good.
  • Of course, your name, title and if possible, a headshot.

Don’t let length, format or your bandwidth be an obstacle to sharing! Send what you have to patrick.foarde@thegandalfgroup.com and we’ll work with you to get it published!
Don’t wait! Send your story today. We’re excited to share your great work!
