Karen Cooper

CEMA Vice Chairwoman
Poly

I don’t know about you, but I’m still reveling in that post-Summit glow and I want to tell all my friends about it! Was it the fantastic content that wove the concept of storytelling throughout several sessions, or helped you think in a lateral way with intellectual humility, or was it the super-cool Vegas experiences that surprised and delighted? Maybe it was all the smiling faces of both old friends and new connections. Perhaps it was that surprise appearance from Patti LaBelle.  Regardless, it was one to remember and I hope all of you will too.

As we move into the second-half of the year I think about what’s next, which puts me well into 2020, and I know that next July will be here before we know it. But before I get too far ahead, I want to take a moment to pause and express a little gratitude for where we are right now. CEMA is a fantastic organization and part of what makes it so great is our members. Thank you for being part of this community. We had 190 new attendees at Summit, which is just amazing, and we hope to see all of you next year in Nashville (and hopefully for a few study tours and smaller events before then!).

CEMA GOLD Member XDAgency Shares Summit 2019:

“CEMA “Experiences” Transform Networking”

Cue the Kleenex. We Honor You, David Shackley

Our CEMA members are not only highly skilled, but also incredibly kind, thoughtful and compassionate. We recently learned of a story featuring one of our long treasured CEMA members, CEMA Board Member and Vice President of Corporate Communications for Marriott David Shackley.

While David was staying at one of the Marriott hotels in San Francisco to compete in the 2019 Alcatraz Sharkfest Swim (wow!), he developed a relationship with one of the door people at the hotel. David learned from the door person that his father had competed in the race and actually won the race three times! He also shared with David that his father was not allowed to race this year, and his father was incredibly disappointed he was unable to participate.

David was so moved by the door person’s story, he declared he would swim in his father’s honor, and would return with a medal in his name. True to his word, David returned to the hotel that afternoon with a medal for 1st place. He then presented the medal to the door person and asked that he present the medal to his father as a gift.

Yes, you are a member of a very special community. We are humbled and so proud every day by the work you do and perhaps more importantly, by the incredibly wonderful human beings you all are. It is an honor to have each and every one of you as a CEMA member.

GAYLORD PALMS RESORT & CONVENTION CENTER BREAKS GROUND ON $158 MILLION EXPANSION
Completed Expansion Will Add 90,000 Square Feet of Meeting and Pre-function Space, 302 Guest Rooms
KISSIMMEE, Fla. – (June 18, 2019) – Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center and Ryman Hospitality Properties, Inc. (NYSE: RHP), today celebrated the official groundbreaking of the $158 million expansion of Gaylord Palms in Kissimmee, Fla. The expansion to Gaylord Palms will add 302 guest rooms, featuring an enhanced, modern look, in a new tower located adjacent to the resort’s pools and connected to the current Everglades Atrium. When these rooms are added to the resort’s current 1,416 room inventory, Gaylord Palms will offer a total of 1,718 sleeping rooms.

An additional 90,000 square feet of carpeted meeting and pre-function space will be added to the resort’s current 400,000 square feet. When complete, Gaylord Palms will offer nearly a half-million square feet of space that will firmly establish the resort as a destination for both large and small conventions, along with exhibitions, corporate functions, weddings, reunions and more.

The meeting space additions include a new 30,000-square-foot ballroom, 30,000 square feet of breakout space and approximately 30,000 square feet of carpeted pre-function space. Outside of the Convention Center, a new 12,000-square-foot event lawn also will be added.

Gaylord Palms’ current Cypress Springs Water Park also will grow with a new active river feature and expanded deck space for guests. These additions complement the more recent $4.2 million enhancement to the recreation facilities that included a Double FlowRider surf simulator, two racing waterslides and a tower drop slide

This project will be the largest expansion in the 17-year history of Gaylord Palms. The plans were originally announced by Ryman Hospitality Properties in May 2018.

“We have long-believed that Gaylord Palms is situated in an ideal location for this type of expansion, and we would like to thank the Osceola County Board of County Commissioners for their continued support and enthusiasm for this project,” said Colin Reed, chairman and chief executive officer of Ryman Hospitality Properties. “This region remains one of the most vibrant convention and leisure destinations in the country. We are pleased to add this high-quality space to our existing resort portfolio which will enable us to continue meeting the strong demand we are seeing from group customers who want the all under one roof experience in this market.”

The additions at Gaylord Palms will continue the resort’s tradition of honoring the rich heritage of the State of Florida, including its unique place names, flora and fauna.

Earlier this year, a multi-story parking garage was completed at the resort to support the increase of rooms and convention space. The total expansion project including new meeting space, rooms tower and waterpark enhancements is expected to be completed during the third quarter of 2021.
