Navigating the new world.
Social distancing, masking, vaxing, adapting to WFH, Zooming, pivoting, the new normal, hybrid, all make me want to scream. So, deciding on and attending CEMA Summit in late July was a huge decision for me but seemed like a way to get “back to normal”. And it was. Well, kind of. Summit was normal with keynotes, breakout sessions, networking, group dinner and hosted lunch, which are what I know and love about events. But first came the masking up and keeping my distance while traveling, not partaking of the pretzels and drink on the flight. (Well, I guess that wasn’t much of a hardship.) Arriving at the hotel and seeing a few masks; not all hotel staff were masked up and then it hit me. I wasn’t in CA anymore. Another adjustment for me, a different state with fewer pandemic rules. It was decision time. Do I mask up? It felt safe that CEMA was taking precautions, so once I was in the meeting space, no mask required. Although if I didn’t know someone very well it may have been a fist bump rather than a handshake and certainly only a select few hugs.
The opportunity to be normal again. To see friends and acquaintances’ faces. Talk to humans without a video screen. To see expressions and gestures. All were refreshing. Kind of a step back in time. But let’s not forget why I took a chance and committed to attending a meeting; it was content and networking.
CEMA’s approach to content was spot on with panels and workshops, customer and industry stories, best practices and innovation strategies, all informing and providing me with some ideas and inspiration as to the future of events, tools, technology and the art of digital persuasion. I am now looking forward to more of these opportunities (with mask in hand and on face), knowing that is will take a while before we see our organizations moving forward with in-person events and not only all of us event professionals but our customers, feeling more comfortable to mix, mingle and travel.
Let’s keep looking forward to that reality and to the next time we can meet, exchange ideas and fist bumps at a CEMA event.
