Robb Trost

Chairman of CEMA
Sr. Director, Strategic Business Development, Freeman

All I can say is WOW. I must have just blinked because it’s July and that means Summit is almost here. I hope all of you are as excited about this year’s Summit as I am.

One thing I’m looking forward to is reconnecting with everyone and seeing how they’re managing the constant change taking place in our industry. Sure, our industry necessitates ongoing change. And whether we like it or not, change is inevitable. However, I sense some big shifts happening in our space. Mergers and acquisitions continue to change the landscape of how we do business on a macro and micro scale.

As for me, I’m choosing to embrace the chaos of change since it allows me to improve upon what I can control. My attitude. My decisions. My values. What I choose to care about.

We are event marketers and strategists—some of the nimblest professionals around. We have chosen this industry because we enjoy the constant challenge of taming the wild beast, we call event marketing. How we respond dictates our successes or failures. Just because we cannot control something does not mean we will fail. Conversely, just because we CAN control something does not guarantee success. Our attitude and decisions will ultimately determine our results.

Safe travels and we’ll see you in Las Vegas.

MEMBER OF THE MONTH

Michelle Olmstead

Michelle Olmstead

Global Event Marketing Manager
Ivanti

As a Global Event Marketing Manager at Ivanti, Michelle Olmstead is one of the driving forces behind a portfolio of successful global events. With 16 years of diverse experience, she has been thriving in the frenzied world of marketing and events, loving the challenges and excitement each day brings.

Michelle graduated from San Jose State University with a B.S. in Public Relations and Business. During her time in undergrad she won a highly ambitious competition, winning over the General Motors executives with her one-million-dollar public relations campaign. Some of her favorite projects before Ivanti include event production of movie openings and press junkets for companies such as Sony Animation and Pixar Studios.

Michelle grew up in a small beach town on the Central Coast of California. Her favorite thing to do in her free time is to take her Maltese-Yorkie, Brooklyn to the beach. She is a devoted Dallas Cowboys fan and when she is not at the beach, she loves trying new restaurants and wine tasting. Michelle has been fortunate enough to travel to some great places during her time at Ivanti and awards Prague as the most remarkable city so far, loving its historic buildings and gothic architecture.

In times of indecision, Michelle recalls her favorite quote by Kobi Yamada. “If you knew you could not fail, what would you attempt?”

CEMA Executive Profile

Chris Meyer

Chris Meyer

CEO
George P. Johnson

Chris Meyer is CEO of George P Johnson, the world’s leading experience marketing agency. He is passionate about the power of experiential as a core component to corporate marketing programs and leads a world-class team at GPJ delivering award-winning physical and digital experiences for brands across the globe.

Meyer joined GPJ in 2000 through the acquisition of Conference Planners, where he was CEO. Prior to becoming CEO at GPJ, he held several senior executive roles within the agency. He also held leadership positions with INXPO, where he was instrumental in the packaging and production of virtual events featuring both on-demand and live streaming content for use in marketing, corporate training and internal meetings.

Since being named CEO of George P. Johnson in 2013, Meyer has spearheaded the revitalization of the 105-year old agency, ensuring its recognition as the home of experiential marketing’s preeminent experts. What’s followed has been year-over-year revenue growth for GPJ, culminating in 2018 being its best yet. He brought GPJ to where it is today by infusing legacy client relationships such as FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles), IBM, Nissan, Salesforce, and Cisco with fresh methods and insight, and forming new partnerships with companies like Google, Macy’s, Facebook, Workday, ServiceNow, and Rodan + Fields.

The future is bright for GPJ, which has been named a best place to work by Event Marketer and Ad Age under Meyer’s leadership. But his focus extends beyond the agency’s 1400+ employees. He devotes his spare time to guest lecturing at several universities, including his alma mater Cornell University – where he graduated from the School of Hotel Administration – on the interdisciplinary nature of experiential marketing. An avid traveler who loves snow skiing, boating, and adventure travel alongside his wife and two kids, his motto is that success isn’t owed to one person alone.

Chris will be delivering a keynote at the CEMA Summit with Salesforce client Karin Flores, VP of Corporate Marketing and Strategic Events. The keynote, entitled “What’s Next in Experiential Marketing,” will cover emerging trends and direction of the experiential marketing industry.
