CEMA Newsletter: October 2025
Your Voice. Your Leadership. Your CEMA.
Gary Murakami, CMP-Fellow, CMM, DES
2025 Chair, CEMA Advisory Board
Advisory Board nominations are now open. Take this opportunity to help shape the future of our community and make a lasting impact in corporate event marketing.
This year, CEMA has demonstrated the remarkable strength and creativity of our community to innovate, connect, and lead in corporate event marketing. Serving as Chair of the Advisory Board has been a true privilege, allowing me to see firsthand the dedication, collaboration, and vision that drive our event marketers and industry partners. The 35th CEMA Summit in Austin was a standout moment—our most well-attended gathering ever—where bold ideas were shared, meaningful connections were formed, and new opportunities for growth and learning came to life.
We are now excited to open nominations for the 2026 Advisory Board. The current Board has provided incredible leadership, insight, and commitment, guiding initiatives that strengthen engagement, foster learning, and drive innovation. Building on their achievements, new board members will have the opportunity to help shape our community, influence strategic direction, and leave a lasting impact. I encourage anyone with vision, experience, and a desire to contribute to apply—or to nominate a colleague whose perspective and expertise will advance CEMA.
Looking ahead through the remainder of 2025, the energy from the Summit continues to inspire our programs, like our Regional Dinners, Study Tours, and member engagement opportunities. In 2026, CEMA will also roll out a streamlined membership model designed to enhance value, provide more resources, and create a stronger, more connected experience for all members. None of this progress would be possible without the dedication of our event marketer community, the collaboration of our industry partners, and the leadership of the Advisory Board and the CEMA team. This year has only reinforced my confidence in the power of our collective impact, and I am certain that together we will continue advancing corporate event marketing while strengthening the connections that make this community truly exceptional.
With gratitude,
Gary Murakami, CMP-Fellow, CMM, DES

Corporate Events Power 100 of 2025
It is an honor to welcome you to this year’s CEMA Rising Stars + Champions Power List. When we introduced this campaign, we knew it would be challenging to narrow this list from hundreds of professionals to 50 Rising Stars and 50 Champions.
We are proud to spotlight the incredibly talented individuals who represent the heart of the CEMA community. This initiative is more than a recognition program — it is a celebration of the event professionals whose creativity, leadership, and vision are shaping the future of the global business events community.

Member Spotlight: Diane Schuler

Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got involved with CEMA? Â
Raised on a generational Minnesota farm, I developed resilience and resourcefulness early. I built a decades-long career as an Executive Assistant to global leaders at Accenture and Oracle, managing high-stakes logistics and helping support international events. In 2025, I produced my employer’s Sales Kickoff, sparking a passion for strategic event production. This led to a permanent role and industry networking, through which I discovered CEMA and had the good fortune to join its September Study Tour in Las Vegas.Â
Can you share a memorable way that CEMA has expanded your network or created new professional opportunities? Â
Attending the recent CEMA Study Tour introduced me to a generous, experienced network of Event Management professionals. Their openness and willingness to support my growth in a new role was both memorable and energizing. I left with meaningful connections and a sense of community that continues to broaden my understanding and expand my opportunities.Â
What are you currently learning about (either professionally or personally)? Â
Following a recent move from Georgia back to Minnesota, I’m quite literally gearing up for winter—researching and selecting ski equipment to enjoy the season with my 8- and 11-year-old nephews. I’m excited to hit the slopes with them and plan to start ski lessons as soon as the snow arrives.Â
What are you most passionate about outside of work? Â
Outside of work, I’m passionate about health, fitness, and childhood literacy. I strength train several times a week with my coaches, which keeps me grounded and energized. I also volunteer with a middle school reading program, where I help students build confidence and a lifelong love of learning. Both pursuits reflect my commitment to growth—physically, mentally, and within my community. Â
What is the best piece of advice someone has given you? Â
The best advice I’ve received is: “Play the game you’ve got.” It came from both my golf instructor and several supervisors, and it’s become a guiding principle. It reminds me to lean into what makes me uniquely effective—my perspective, approach, and values. It keeps me focused on growth, delivering with integrity, and serving others meaningfully. Just as importantly, it helps me quickly accept when things don’t go as planned and pivot toward solutions with clarity and purpose. 6. As an industry leader, what challenges do you see on the horizon for the events industry, and how can event professionals collaborate to turn those challenges into opportunities? As somewhat of a newbie to this field, it appears one of the biggest challenges ahead is balancing rising audience expectations with static or shrinking budgets. While rapid advancements in technology offer a powerful opportunity to enhance engagement, to truly innovate, event professionals must also have the courage to be transparent about what doesn’t work. Sharing failures openly accelerates learning and fosters trust. By collaborating—through honest dialogue, experimentation, and shared insights—we can turn constraints into catalysts and elevate the impact of every event.Â
