Taking Care of Yourself in the Chaos of Event Marketing
Traci DePuy
Chief Marketing Officer, PCMA
If you work in corporate event marketing, you already know. This job is wild. One minute, you’re planning six months ahead. The next minute, you are putting out fires you never even saw coming.
I have been there more times than I can count. And while there is so much I love about what we do, I also know how heavy it can get. The constant juggling. The pressure to deliver bigger and better every single time. The endless checklist that somehow grows overnight no matter how many things you cross off. It can be a lot.
For a long time, I just accepted the stress as part of the deal. I thought if I was tired or overwhelmed, it just meant I was doing it right. Hustle culture had a pretty good grip on me. But the truth is, that approach is not sustainable. You can love your work and still burn yourself out if you are not careful.
Lately, I have been trying to be more honest with myself about what I need. Not just in the big moments, but in the day-to-day. Taking real breaks. Setting actual work boundaries. Letting go of the idea that I have to be “on” all the time. I am realizing that protecting my energy is not selfish. It is smart. It makes me better at what I do. And it helps me stay connected to why I chose this career in the first place.
Since May is Mental Health Awareness Month, it feels like the perfect time to really recommit to taking care of ourselves. Let’s make May a resurgence of the importance of mental health all year round, not just for a few weeks.
If you are feeling the pressure, you are not alone. I see you. I get it. We are part of an industry that runs on adrenaline and creativity, but we are still human. We are allowed to be tired. We are allowed to ask for help. We are allowed to take a breath.
I know it is not always easy to hit pause when you are in the middle of a thousand moving parts. But small things add up. A real lunch break. A walk outside between meetings. Saying no to one more “quick call” that is not really quick at all. Giving yourself a little grace when everything is not perfect.
And honestly, we need to talk about this more with our teams. Mental health should not be some side conversation. It should be part of how we plan, how we lead, and how we show up for each other. Because the truth is, no event is worth sacrificing your health over.
You are doing important work. And you deserve to feel good while you are doing it.
Take care of yourself. The next event will still be there tomorrow

Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got involved with CEMA?
I am a trifecta/unicorn event marketer – having career experience in hotels, agencies and event marketing teams. I joined CEMA a few years ago with the intention to keep CE credits for my CMP but have really seen a much deeper impact in my personal and professional brand based on relationships & experiences CEMA has provided me especially in the last 2 years.
What inspired you to join CEMA’s Branding and Messaging Committee?
I feel very passionate about the success of CEMA and why it’s so different than other event professional groups. Having the dedication to the marketing side of events is way deeper than just event operations or logistics. The bench of members is impressive, and I want to ensure that our newer generation of event marketers have a safe and constructive place to join to help them navigate their personal career journeys.
We’d love to hear how your committee work has influenced your perspective or expanded your professional connections.
Being on the committee has provided me deeper relationships with other marketers and IP’s that have resulted in job interviews and better understanding of event technology that exists!
What value do you see the committees bringing to CEMA membership and the organization as a whole?
It’s imperative to the success of an association that all members have a voice. The BOD serves a different purpose of leading change, but in order to understand what the members want you need outlets, such as committees, to get a broader lense into the voices, thoughts and opinions of the larger membership base.
What are you currently learning about (either professionally or personally)?
So many things, everyday! Leaning into how AI can enhance our work and make efficiencies which everyone needs. Strategies around content atomization and other differentiators when creating program agendas to focus on ROI well past the events last day.
What is the best piece of advice someone has given you?
Lead with integrity and stay true to my personal brand and what I believe in. Avoid getting caught up in emotions and drama and always keep an eye on what is best for yourself and those around you – honesty and integrity are always the right answer and having confidence in yourself helps drive that.

Behind the Scenes at Atlassian Team ’25: A CEMA Study Tour Experience
Written by Amy Jesernig, Business Development & Account Director, Invision
This month’s CEMA Study Tour took us behind the scenes of Atlassian Team ’25 — a flagship event that’s helping Atlassian deepen connections with their fast-growing global customer base. Known as a leading in-person event with a hybrid digital strategy, Team ’25 was a masterclass in how to strategically blend in-person experiences with an even broader digital reach. Thirty-five event professionals from a variety of industries came together for this 2-day learning program. For the first time in years, Atlassian moved Team ’25 out of Las Vegas and into Anaheim, California, creating a vibrant campus-style environment across four venues: the Anaheim Convention Center, Marriott, Hilton, and Westin. This change of scenery brought a fresh energy to the event and a unique layout that thoughtfully leveraged each space to enhance the participant journey.
Our Study Tour started with an incredible opportunity to attend the opening keynote — a dynamic conversation featuring Atlassian Co-Founder and CEO Mike Cannon-Brookes alongside James Vowles, Team Principal for Williams Racing, and racing legend Jenson Button. The packed house buzzed with excitement as they unveiled an inspiring new partnership between Atlassian and the historic F1 Williams Racing team — a moment that set an electric tone for the event.
One of the highlights of the Study Tour was an exclusive walkthrough of the tradeshow floor led by Atlassian’s Event Strategist, Holly Venable, and Senior Event Marketing Manager, Natasha Messina. They shared their intentional design approach, creating a floor plan that not only delivered exactly what participants wanted but also wove in multiple feedback moments throughout the event — a brilliant way to turn the event into a product improvement engine.
A major theme emerged throughout the tour: a deep, thoughtful commitment to understanding diverse audience needs. Whether designing for in-person guests or virtual participants, Atlassian has developed a model that meets audiences where they are — both physically and digitally. Their advanced hybrid strategy was particularly impressive, with every element of the live event carefully crafted to optimize digital engagement, capture post-event content, and deliver strong ROI long after the event wraps.
Panel conversations deepened the knowledge-sharing about the Team ‘25 and everything that went into it, and included industry luminaries such as Invision CEO Angie Smith, who also shared on the importance of cultivating strong event marketing communities through organizations like CEMA to help experiential leaders share best practices and advance the industry as a whole.
Beyond the event itself, the CEMA Study Tour also gave us a chance to explore the vibrant city of Anaheim — from the energy of the OCVIBE district to the charm of the Anaheim Packing District. And of course, an unforgettable night at Disneyland, where casual conversations about theme park favorites turned into meaningful connections with industry peers. It’s rare to find experiences that remind us how much we all share beyond our job titles — but magic like that happens often on CEMA Study Tours.
One of the greatest values of these tours is the diversity of perspectives we get to learn from. Regardless of background or experience, the CEMA community comes together through a shared passion for creating exceptional events. CEMA Study Tours like this one are the ultimate reminder that collaboration, curiosity, and community are the heart of what we do.
A huge thank you to Atlassian for opening their doors — and their playbook — to all of us. We walked away inspired, energized, and ready to apply new ideas to our own events.

This is a question from Julia Ross – Director, Events Marketing, Tyler Technologies.
Julia Ross: Hi everyone – Does anyone know of a benchmarking resource for technology user conference? Specifically, one data point I’m looking at is the percentage of overall client base who attend the conference.
Jodi Morrison: Are you using an external registration platform? Your supplier should be able to provide at a minimum who registered and you can compare that to either your invitee list or your client list. I would be happy to discuss this with you and how we did this when I was at Oracle and how I have seen suppliers provide this service to include full analytics in their platforms.
