Gordon Stake

Managing Partner / Event Marketing Partners
Treasurer, CEMA Board of Advisors

Make plans to be at CEMA Summit in Nashville, July 31-August 2. There’s nowhere like it to learn from and network with the best of the best. From the newly announced keynote by Judi Holler and her focus on embracing an improvisational mindset to fun and fabulous networking, you will find it an investment in your future.

Agents of Change is the topic of the 2022 CEMA Town Hall and it’s a topic that should be top of mind for all of us. For those who know me, I have a daughter going through the college admissions process. It’s involved multiple trips to both coasts and touring quite a few campuses. On one tour during a session led by three academic Deans, I was struck by something they said that really resonated with me.

These educators shared their pandemic learnings and how academics at their university will change moving forward. They shared that the pandemic demonstrated how some things works really well virtually/digitally while others are best done in person. Their musings started me thinking of what our team has learned during and as we come out of the pandemic. We’ve learned how to pivot and to embrace change. We’ve learned that your 2019 event agenda isn’t going to work for your 2022 event. We have all learned a new way to effectively communicate and that we can learn digitally. What resonated with me is the importance of in-person event marketing and the value proposition that digital events offer.

2022 is a new world where we can take what we’ve learned to create even more effective and meaningful events. Why do breakout sessions have to happen only during an event? Why can’t they be used for pre-work or post-event follow up to extend engagement and build value for attendees and the event organizer? This is what the Deans were discussing for their students, and our future attendees.

Get out from behind your computer to join me and the talented professionals who will be building those new best practices at CEMA Summit. You’ll share ideas and learn new things, connect with your peers, and it’s a lot of fun. It’s time well spent.

I hope to see you in Nashville, Gordon

CEMA In-the-News

The 2022 NFL Draft Event from a Meeting Planner Perspective

May 11, 2022

CEMA Says

Caesars Entertainment’s program featured participation from CEMA, an 800-member-strong association of meeting and events professionals that frequently participates in Study Tours to high-profile events such as the NFL Draft.

“As event organizers and planners, we don’t often get the opportunity to go get an exclusive look at something so prestigious as this, and how it’s built from the ground up, and how it measures for success,” said Angie Smith, head of experiential events and field marketing for global software company Atlassian, who participated in the CEMA Study Tour. “With them being in a completely different vertical than us, it’s important for CEMA to offer these opportunities, because there’s so many parallels in how we do things, but at the same time it’s very different.”

Smith said one major insight she had was the almost never-ending cycle of the event.

“We commonly think of NFL sports being a seasonal thing, but they have been able to monetize and engage their viewers 12 months a year, and craft experiences to create the next generation of viewers—they just don’t stop,” she said. “I think the parallel in my world is we don’t create an event to be a moment in time. I’m in charge of creating leads and generating pipelines 365 days a year as well.

“[The NFL is] finding the next generation of fans, and I’m just trying to find the next buyer of a product,” she added. “To take a step out of what you do every day and see how it’s done in another industry lets you walk away kind of on a high and full of inspiration.”

As with probably most of the Study Tour participants, the sheer number of activations—such as the multi-day NFL Draft Experience filled with fan experiences and memorabilia for sale—while managing the pressure of staging a live broadcast was the most impressive aspect of the event.

“It’s so different when you’re activating across an entire city,” she said. “It was happening in like 20 different venues throughout the city at the same time. To get it right was just fascinating.”

“It really inspired me to think about how I create experiences for our C-level audience,” she continued. “It’s developing a sense of engagement on a level so they’re going to be forever committed to this organization because of the way you made them feel.”

Video highlights of the NFL Draft

Twenty CEMA members participated in the Behind-the-Scenes NFL Draft Study Tour sponsored by Caesars Entertainment and the LVCVA.  The group visited 10 venues including the draft theatre and a viewing from the Eiffel Tower restaurant of the red-carpet media interviews in the Bellagio fountains. More than 300,00 fans attended, 1000 people worked the event that was managed by a 35-person NFL planning crew.
