CEMA Newsletter: March 2026

CEMA Summit 2026 is officially open for registration. Its taking place August 9–11 in Toronto, and we’d love for you to join us. This year’s theme, “Where the World Comes Together,” couldn’t be more fitting. Every summer the CEMA community gathers for a few days that feel a lot like a family reunion — old friends reconnecting, new faces joining the circle, and everyone sharing what they’ve learned along the way. CEMA Summit is where global perspectives converge, where proven strategies are shared openly, and where the voice of event marketers leads the conversation about where our industry goes next. Think of it as the one time of year where the people who actually run events get together to compare notes, swap stories, and maybe admit a few “you wouldn’t believe what happened five minutes before doors opened” moments.

This year we’re gathering in Toronto — one of the most multicultural cities in the world — and yes, our very friendly neighbors to the north are hosting us. Expect a little extra politeness, maybe a few “sorrys,” and a city that knows how to welcome the world. Over three days you’ll hear real stories and real lessons from event marketers who are navigating the same challenges you are. Come spend a few days learning, reconnecting, and celebrating the craft of event marketing with your CEMA family. Register now and join us in Toronto for CEMA Summit 2026 — Where the World Comes Together

The 50 Percent Rule to Reinvent Your Event Every Year

Written by: Allison Barrett, Director of Global Events, Culture Amp

In a sea of events that often look and feel the same, how do we give attendees a reason to register, commit their time, and—most importantly—return?

Would you challenge yourself to change 50% of your event every year? Sounds intense and a little risky, no? Even for things that “work?”

I came across this idea from one of my company’s brand sponsorship partners, Tennis Australia, and I’m thinking differently about benchmarks for innovation.

As the governing body behind the Australian Open, Tennis Australia has transformed a “traditional” sports tournament into one of the world’s most innovative sporting and entertainment experiences. One of their secrets? A radical internal mandate: Intentionally reinvent more than 50% of the fan experience every single year.

The Innovation Mandate to Compete

The “50% rule” was born out of a strategic necessity to compete for global attention and resources alongside established tennis tournament giants in London (Wimbledon), New York (US Open), and Paris (Roland Garros). They couldn’t just host a tournament; they had to build an “innovation machine” to continuously bring new and differentiating experiences to their guests.

One early bet: they took their broadcasting in-house, becoming one of the first major sports properties in the world to do so. This level of change requires a massive appetite for risk but also pushes us to stand out from our competitors.

The Power of Compounding Innovation

For many senior event leaders, the idea of changing 50% of an event sounds like a recipe for chaos. But this model suggests that innovation follows a compounding curve.

  • It Starts Slow: Early on, the risk feels highest. But as a team develops a “maturity” for keeping and killing ideas, the process becomes disciplined rather than erratic.
  • It Gains Momentum: That first step or big change—such as overhauling your event technology or moving a conference to another city —is the hardest. But it can be as small as building more connection moments in your agenda. Once you trust the process, the innovation cycle becomes part of your team’s DNA.
  • It Becomes a Competitive Advantage: Change, when approached with intention and providing value to your audience, becomes the most powerful tool in your event program.

A Challenge to Event Leaders

Reflect on how much you’re innovating from the prior event.

  • Are you settling for 5% or 10% change because it’s safe and “how we do things?”
  • What would happen if you reinvented core elements of your event?

One small innovation we’re exploring is leveraging AI to auto transcribe and summarize session content in Miro boards for post-event distribution. This little innovation is not only a more engaging visual format for attendees to receive content, but it also replaces a more manual process for a “takeaways doc” and allows our team to focus on other impactful priorities.

Whatever innovation looks like for you, big or small, just ensure it’s intentional and audience-centric.

This year, don’t just aim to be better. Aim to be at least 25% and maybe even 50% different.

Lessons in Awe: What Event Marketers Learned at Cirque du Soleil

Earlier this year, CEMA members traveled to Las Vegas for a behind-the-scenes look at how some of the world’s most iconic live experiences are designed, produced, and delivered.

During the Study Tour, participants explored the operational and creative strategies behind productions by Cirque du Soleil and heard from leaders across MGM Resorts International, Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, and Allegiant Stadium.

But the most meaningful insights came directly from the event marketers who attended.

What Event Marketers Took Away

Across attendee reflections, several themes stood out:

Creative vision requires operational precision
The magic audiences experience on stage is made possible by extraordinary planning, coordination, and discipline behind the scenes.

Experiences are built by people
From performers to technicians to producers, human talent and collaboration remain at the heart of unforgettable moments.

Awe is intentional
Every detail—from choreography to stage design—is engineered to create emotional impact and lasting memories.

In Chicago, we redefine what’s possible for meetings and conventions — and Navy Pier is proof. It’s a historic gem on Chicago’s lakefront and one of the top attractions in the Midwest. But Navy Pier is more than an iconic landmark along Lake Michigan’s shoreline — it’s a premier, large-scale convention center unlike anywhere else.

Here are 6 reasons to meet at Navy Pier:

  • Navy Pier Convention Hotel Collection, which features more than 4,000 hotel rooms and premier meeting space with unparalleled views of Chicago’s lakefront and skyline
  • Offshore, the world’s largest rooftop venue, provides up to 36,000 square feet of panoramic indoor and outdoor event space
  • Free arts and culture programming designed to inspire, educate, and connect visitors
  • More than 50 acres of green space, including Polk Bros Park
  • Countless restaurants, retail shops, and attractions, including lake cruises, the Centennial Wheel, and Flyover
  • Easy access to Chicago’s downtown core and neighborhoods (don’t miss the seasonal water taxi!)

For meeting planners seeking a destination that goes beyond the expected, Navy Pier is Never Done and Never Outdone.
