Brian MasonCEMA 2025 Year in Review

Brian Mason, MBA
VP, Strategy & Operations | CEMA

What a year. When I look back at everything we accomplished together in 2025, the word that keeps coming to mind is community. Real community. The kind that shows up, leans in, shares openly, and lifts each other up. And this year, CEMA did exactly that.

The year peaked in Austin for CEMA Summit 2025, and it was truly something special. More than 820 event marketers, partners, and friends came together at the Fairmont to reconnect, learn, celebrate wins, and push each other to think bigger. We heard from David Burkus on the future of AI, and Elaine Welteroth on her incredible career and how to be bold and resilient in our own careers. Visit Austin produced an amazing welcome event at Austin City Limits, LVCVA and Partners brought the glam of Las Vegas, and we finished out the week with one heck of a party at Bangers. Cowboy hats everywhere. It was AWESOME.

Our Study Tours took a major leap forward this year. We produced seven tours across North America and EMEA, from HIMSS and ServiceNow Knowledge to Atlassian Team, Cvent Connect, Salesforce World Tour in London, Oktane, and IMEX finishing off the year. Over 180 members experienced these behind-the-scenes programs, and every single tour had that same magic: honest conversations, access you simply can’t get anywhere else, and connections that last well beyond the event.

Then there were our Regional Dinners, which absolutely exploded in 2025. What started as a small idea at the beginning of the year turned into 20+ dinners across major cities, bringing together 300+ event marketers for intimate, real conversations. No stage, no scripts — just peers talking shop, sharing lessons, and building genuine relationships.

We also strengthened our CEMA Partner Program, expanding opportunities for sponsors to plug into our content, tours, events, and the membership in more meaningful ways. And speaking of membership — we closed the year at 1,100+ members, a record for CEMA and proof that this community is growing because it means something.

2025 was big. Not because of numbers, but because of the people behind them. And if this year is any indication, 2026 is going to be something incredible.

Community

Member Spotlight: Jessica Colmenares

“The relationships and friendships I’ve built through CEMA have propelled my career forward but will continue to enrich my life well beyond my professional career.”

Meet Jessica

Jessica has called the CEMA community home for the past 12 years, serving the Advisory Board and helping strengthen the network that has shaped her professional journey. In her role as Director of Sales, Worldwide Accounts at Hilton, she supports technology-focused customers in bringing their meeting and event goals to life — always pairing thoughtful partnerships with remarkable hospitality. Jessica’s passion for connection and collaboration shines through everything she does.

Finding Purpose Through Connection

After years of involvement, Jessica reflects on how the CEMA community has shaped both her professional and personal growth. The connections and camaraderie within CEMA have pushed her to stretch beyond her comfort zone and think more deeply about the lasting impact of in-person engagements. Through shared experiences, she has come to understand that every stage — from ideation and planning to execution — contributes to moments that extend far beyond the event itself.

Leading and Leaving a Legacy

As Jessica wraps up her current term on the CEMA Advisory Board, one highlight stands out: helping the organization surpass its membership goal of 1,100 members before year’s end. Contributing to the Membership Committee, particularly on renewals, was both rewarding and energizing. “It’s a great feeling,” she notes, “to know that our work directly helped the CEMA community grow.” This accomplishment reflects not only dedication to the board’s vision but also the power of teamwork and persistence.

Lessons in Leadership and Collaboration

Reflecting on her time on the CEMA Advisory Board, Jessica points to CEMA’s remarkable growth and innovation as a source of pride. “It’s amazing to see what CEMA has produced this year for its members,” she shares. What was once two annual study tours has expanded to more than seven, with 20 regional dinners hosted across the U.S. — and 40 planned for next year. These experiences have reinforced for her how collaboration and community are the heartbeat of CEMA, keeping members connected and inspired year-round.

Grounded in Motion

Outside of work and volunteering, [First Name] finds clarity and balance through running. “Running is my therapy,” they say. Whether it’s hitting the trails around the Bay Area or spending time by the ocean watching their husband and kids surf, those quiet, active moments bring calm and perspective — the same qualities that guide them as a professional and leader.

Words to Work (and Live) By

When asked what advice she would offer to emerging leaders in the industry, Jessica doesn’t hesitate: get involved and build your network. “The relationships and friendships I’ve built through CEMA have propelled my career forward but will continue to enrich my life well beyond my professional journey,” she reflects. For her, the value of CEMA lies not only in professional growth but in the enduring friendships it fosters.

Looking Ahead: The Next Era of Events

Looking toward the future, Jessica believes the next era of event marketing will center on deeper, more purposeful engagement. “Attendees want to maximize their time and impact at events,” she explains. “They’re craving experiences that are purpose-driven, powered by data, and supported through technology.” As the industry evolves, smaller and more community-focused events will play a vital role in fostering those meaningful, lasting connections.

Quick Takes with Jessica

  • Favorite CEMA memory: The Advisory Board meeting in Hawaii — business got done, but the best memories were made outside the meetings.
  • Favorite event destination: Anywhere that allows for an early morning run before the day begins.
  • Event-day essential: Comfortable shoes — Cole Haan’s are the go-to.
  • Go-to productivity hack: A great playlist to fuel creativity and focus.
  • Biggest lesson learned as a board member: Take the leap. Step out of your comfort zone to lead, present, and volunteer.

A Note of Gratitude

As Jessica looks to the future, she carries immense gratitude for the CEMA community that has shaped so much of her professional journey. “I’m so grateful for this community and what it has provided for me,” she shares. “I can’t wait to see — and be part of — the next era of CEMA. If you’re feeling inspired to volunteer, let’s do it together. I’ll help you take the leap!”

Executive Forum Recap

by Maggie Barton Baird, Head of Events, Jobber

CEMA’s 1st Executive Forum Brings Deep connections and C-level Education.

Attending the CEMA Executive Forum 2025 at the Gaylord Pacifc Resort and Convention Center was genuinely one of the most meaningful professional resets I’ve had in a long time. Being surrounded by executive event leaders who were willing to be honest, curious, and vulnerable created a rare kind of space — the kind where you can say the quiet parts out loud and actually get better because of it. I left feeling re-energized not just by the conversations, but by how much shared experience turned into real perspective on what it means to lead events as a business driver right now.

Ebony Beckwidth’s (Former Chief Business Officer at Salesforce) facilitation was a huge part of why the retreat worked so well. She created a psychologically safe environment that still pushed us toward rigor and action, and that combination unlocked both mindset shifts and tangible takeaways for me. I walked away with practical steps to reframe my role in a way that empowers my team while also giving me clearer authority as a strategic driver. I also had a big mental unlock around stakeholders — that some internal sponsors are simply “hard graders,” and that doesn’t mean I’m failing; it means I need to stay grounded in outcomes and keep building trust over time.

What I appreciated most is that the Forum didn’t stop at high-level leadership reflection — it offered real tactics and tools I’ll use immediately, and it also created relationships I know will outlast the weekend. Building deeper connections with other senior event marketers was incredibly valuable, and just as importantly, spending time with the sponsors and the broader PCMA team added a layer of partnership and perspective that I don’t get in my day-to-day. I’m actively thinking about forming a personal “board of directors,” both internally and externally, to help me grow and stay connected to reality as the role gets more complex. I’m also taking home practical ideas like using lead scanners at our own user conference booth so we can hyper-personalize post-event nurturing, and adopting a culture of candid evaluation by asking out loud, “Does this suck?” or “If we could blow it up, what would we do?” I left reminded that it’s not just my job to lift up my team — there’s a whole village that wants to help — and even with my reading list growing (One Minute Manager and Unreasonable Hospitality are now queued up), the community and relationships I gained here may be the most valuable takeaway of all.

The Anaheim Convention Center (ACC) isn’t just a venue—it’s a launchpad for next-level events. As meeting and experience designers look for destinations that blend innovation, flexibility, and attendee appeal, Anaheim continues to stand out with one of the most versatile convention campuses in North America. From immersive brand takeovers to large-scale general sessions and experiential activations, planners gain the freedom to build something truly unforgettable.

Beyond its 1.8 million square feet of flexible space, the ACC offers a walkable, attendee-friendly ecosystem powered by more than 18,000 hotel rooms within one-mile, modern digital infrastructure, and a destination atmosphere that naturally fuels engagement. Recent enhancements, spanning upgraded technology, improved traffic flow, and expanded outdoor event opportunities, give planners even more creative runway. And with ongoing investments throughout the campus and the surrounding Anaheim Resort district, events can scale, evolve, and reimagine year after year.

But what truly sets Anaheim apart is how seamlessly the city and the convention center support the evolving expectations of CEMA and PCMA-level programs. Whether you’re producing a high-stakes customer conference, a global sales meeting, or a high-energy experiential summit, Anaheim’s team anticipates needs before they arise, ensuring production value, attendee comfort, and logistical execution align at every step. Sustainability initiatives and responsible event practices are also woven into planning, helping organizations uphold their environmental commitments without sacrificing creativity.

For planners focused on delivering impact, immersion, and momentum, the Anaheim Convention Center continues to rise to the moment, offering a destination that’s forward-thinking as the events it hosts.
