2027 New Vice Chair: Leslie Hasvold

Leslie, an over 25-year veteran of the corporate event industry is the Sr. Director, Global Strategic Events for Cloudflare. Living and breathing event marketing, Leslie specializes in turning chaotic logistics into high-converting global experiences. From architecting audience acquisition strategies that target high-value buyers to calculating attrition down to the single digit, she ensures every event moves the revenue needle, all while maintaining a strict “no boring parties” policy. She joined the CEMA board to help members navigate the future of strategic events while keeping the industry connected. Outside of the corporate grid, Leslie is a dedicated AFOL (Adult Fan of LEGO) who understands that both event planning and brick building require immense patience and a lot of tiny pieces. She is also a part-time deer caretaker, whether the herd likes it or not.

How did you first get involved with CEMA, and what has your membership meant to you?

My first CEMA meeting was a small room in Palo Alto in the late oughts. It was mind-blowing enough for me to have learned that this is a real career 10 years prior so to sit in a room full of people who loved this challenging, exciting, and always changing profession made me feel like I was at home. Those of us for whom we get so much out of this job are bonded in a unique way. The education, friendships, and experiences that I have gotten from CEMA over the decades have literally changed my life for the better. If I can give back to the community in any small way, I will be very fortunate.

Of all the professional communities you could be part of, what keeps you invested in CEMA specifically?

I am currently and have been in the past a member of various event associations, as have we all. Each holds its own clear focus and high value. CEMA, though, for me is more than education and networking. Since the beginning, CEMA with its specific commitments to both event marketers and industry partners has created a true community. This can be an overused, less meaningful word, but here, it holds its definition. The CEMA community, including nodding to the humans that make up the advisory board, are among the most thoughtful, strategic, and passionate people in the event industry. I have gotten jobs, made life-long friends, evolved as a professional, and literally had my life saved (that’s a story over cocktails at the next Summit) because of this community. In this role I intend to perpetuate that benefit for all our members. Minus the lifesaving. That was pretty specific to me.

How would you describe your leadership style, and where do you think that style came from?

My leadership style can vary depending on the situation. With my direct reports, even when I can’t always show it, they are my number one priority. Assuring their growth and psychological safety should be my focus over the reporting, the politics, and, indeed, my role in an association. With my team, my peers, my leaders, and my fellow board members, I operate under a philosophy I couldn’t name until someone else did it for me recently. I hold strong opinions, weakly. I come in with a point of view, and I will advocate for that point of view. But. My mind and heart are open to hear opposing perspectives, and I am not afraid to adjust in the face of data and thoughtful discourse.

What’s something you’re currently working on or exploring that excites you — whether it’s a project, a new skill, or an emerging trend?

I will mention AI again, but I have to talk about it here. AI is now ubiquitous, terrifying, and being adopted a little willy nilly. I have the good fortune of working for a tech company that not only leaned in hard to the ways we can use AI smartly in marketing but invests engineering dollars into creating our own tools. We are Customer Zero. AI is changing how we report, prioritize workflows, write copy, design, and understand our attendee base. If you can suss out how to use AI to support your teams, not replace them, you will win.

  • Go-to productivity hack – Adderall. Just kidding! I am a list junkie, but my favorite is that I am strict about notifications. I do not know I have email until I choose to check it, for example. I keep work chat live on my laptop but not my phone. If something is urgent, they will find me, but email everywhere and work apps on my phone are on my terms.
  • Event-day essential – Portable laptop monitor, event WEEK essential
  • Someone in the CEMA community who inspires you – Angie Smith. That is all. 🙂
  • Biggest lesson you’ve learned this year – AI is a useful tool that when used appropriately will free you and your teams up to do the important work.

Closing Thought:

At the risk of sounding cliché, I am humbled and honored to represent corporate event marketing professionals and our partners via this appointment. What we do for a living, what we pour our blood, sweat, and tears into are at an inflection point. Technology is racing, budgets are fluctuating, and C-level leadership is waking up to the value that we provide. I hope to help amplify our voices beyond these walls and support our professions’ new career growth.

Executive Mystery Retreat Recap

By: Sarina Patel

Attending the CEMA Executive Mystery Retreat was a rewarding experience, with the clear highlight being the chance to step away from the daily routine and genuinely connect with our community. Being surrounded by like-minded peers is not something that happens every day. In our line of work, it is rare to find a space where everyone in the room instantly understands the exact challenges, strategic pain points, and nuances you navigate daily. That shared perspective made every conversation both comforting and constructively actionable.

A standout highlight was spending quality time with Ebony Beckwith. As a Leadership Advisor who helps executives and organizations decode culture, align people and purpose, and lead through transformation, Ebony brought an incredible energy to our weekend. She brought us together to start crucial conversations around navigating change with confidence, giving us practical insights on how to cultivate organizational environments where both high performance and authentic human connection can thrive.

A big part of what made the Executive Mystery Retreat so memorable was the incredible hospitality from Destination Toronto and Visit Seattle. Between the sponsors and CEMA, they set up a space where we could actually slow down, clear our minds, and recharge before the whirlwind of CEMA Summit kicked off. Having that breathing room alongside peers made our conversations far more candid and impactful than your average networking. I walked away energized, with deeper connections, and a comforting reminder that none of us are tackling these high-level leadership challenges on an island.

Mentoring Rings: Sign Up Now to Participate in 2027

By: Rodney Hart, VP of Events | RainFocus

The CEMA community is joining PCMA’s successful Mentoring Rings Program, brought to us by Kati Quigley, BMC Software exec. The Mentorship Ring program engages nearly 100 participants annually, to the CEMA community in 2027.

Mentoring Rings are designed to create meaningful professional connections through a small-group mentorship model. Rather than pairing one mentor with one mentee, each Ring brings together a group of professionals who can learn from an experienced mentor while also learning from the perspectives and experiences of one another.

The program gives mentees access to guidance, peer connections, and a trusted network they can turn to as they navigate career decisions and professional challenges. For mentors, it provides an opportunity to share experience, support the development of others, and help strengthen the next generation of leaders within the CEMA community.

Following the announcement at CEMA Summit, we are continuing to collect interest for the 2027 Mentoring Rings program.

Executive Spotlight: Lindsey Elliott

A native Texan and graduate of The University of Texas at Austin, Lindsey Elliott has spent nearly two decades with Visit Austin. Since 2011, she has served as Director of West Coast Sales, connecting regional meeting professionals and organizations with everything Austin has to offer.

Given Austin’s strong tech presence, Lindsey naturally aligns with the innovation-driven groups she serves. Over the years, she has brought a wide range of events to the city—from intimate 300-person hotel meetings to citywide conventions welcoming over 10,000 attendees. She thrives on finding the ideal fit for every group and helping planners craft experiences that feel distinctly Austin.

Lindsey’s engagement with CEMA began in 2018 at the CEMA Summit at Terranea. She was instantly struck by the warm, welcoming community and its members’ genuine openness to sharing ideas and building lasting relationships. Being part of this network has been deeply rewarding ever since.

A standout highlight of her CEMA journey was welcoming the community to her hometown for CEMA Summit last year. After years of building relationships within the organization, getting to host the event in Austin and showcase the destination she has spent her career representing was especially meaningful.

No One Builds Alone: Key Takeaways from the 2026 CEMA Summit

By: April Shomper

The 2026 CEMA Summit brought together event professionals and senior leaders around a timely central theme: no one builds meaningful experiences alone. In an industry shaped by constant change, rising expectations and increasingly complex stakeholder needs, the Summit reinforced the value of collaboration, intentional strategy and authentic relationships.

Returning to Summit for a second year was especially meaningful because I had the opportunity to both attend and serve as a panelist. The experience began even earlier, with an invitation to the pre-CEMA Summit mystery retreat the weekend before the conference. This was a unique and valuable opportunity to connect with fellow senior leaders, exchange ideas and build genuine relationships before the Summit officially began.

1. Strategy Must Lead the Experience

One of the strongest themes throughout Summit was the importance of moving beyond logistics and focusing on the strategic purpose behind every event decision.

Successful events are not simply collections of sessions, meals and networking opportunities. They are intentional experiences designed around clear objectives, defined audiences and measurable outcomes. That requires event leaders to engage earlier in the planning process, ask better questions and ensure every element, from content and environment to technology and communications, supports the broader business strategy.

The conversation also highlighted the need to balance strategic ambition with practical execution. Event teams must be willing to challenge assumptions, simplify where needed and remain focused on what will create the greatest impact for attendees and stakeholders.

2. In-Person Connection Matters More Than Ever

As AI, digital platforms and virtual communication continue to accelerate, in-person experiences are becoming even more valuable. Digital tools can make information more accessible and meetings more efficient, but they cannot fully replicate the energy, spontaneity and (most importantly) trust created when people are together in the same room.

In many cases, the most meaningful moments happen around the meeting itself: sharing coffee with a peer, continuing a conversation over dinner with a client or connecting informally between sessions. These unscripted interactions often create the foundation for stronger partnerships and more productive collaboration. These experiences are difficult, if not impossible, to reproduce virtually.

The pre-Summit retreat was a powerful example of this principle. With fewer distractions and more time for honest conversation, participants were able to share experiences, challenges and lessons learned in a more personal way. Those conversations continued throughout the Summit and created a stronger foundation for collaboration.

3. Candid Reflection Drives Better Events

I was especially proud to participate as a panelist in “Best Practices, Roasted: What Held Up and What Didn’t.” The session created space for an honest discussion about decisions that worked, decisions that needed to be reconsidered and the lessons that emerged from both.

That kind of reflection is essential. Events are often evaluated through attendance, satisfaction scores, revenue or engagement metrics, but the most valuable learning can come from asking harder questions: Did the experience meet its intended purpose? Were roles and responsibilities clear? Did the format support the audience? What would we change next time?

Being willing to examine the work candidly helps event teams evolve. It also reminds us that progress does not require perfection. It requires curiosity, accountability and a willingness to keep improving.

2026 CEMA Summit reinforced that the future of events will be built through stronger strategy, deeper relationships and more purposeful collaboration. At a time when so much of our work can be automated or delivered digitally, the value of gathering in person has never been clearer. No one builds alone and the most impactful experiences are created when diverse perspectives come together around a shared goal.
